Notes

Throne of Eldraine, Shadows over innistrad, Alara Reborn, Weatherlight, Core 2020, Modern Masters 2015

This format has ton's of bounce lands and tapped duals, some incentive land for artifact tribal along with decent card support. It will be a 2 color format most likely, or mono for aggro.

There is an excellent Gitrog Monster deck, primeval titan deck, artifact deck, equipment deck, aura's deck, Harbringer/Emrakul deck, a bloodbraid elf deck, and 4 cryptic command control (Bouncing Mystic Sanctuary with bouncelands as well). This just names a few that I saw right away. Already this would be an awesome format to play. I love the ways this tests a Brewer's ability to organize data, see things on instinct, apply tools of analysis and the lessons we've learned on how to break down formats. I started with some stand out cards and the mana. I really started with the oldest set, as this one I think provides the most unusual wrinkle to me. We usually don't evaluate legacy sets. Having something like doomsday in a format merits consideration for sure! What if weatherlight got paired with Theros Beyond Death, Innistrad, Ultimate Masters, or War of the Spark? Doomsday with any the alternate self mill cons is a strong finish. It also had peacekeeper, which is a hell of card and certainly format defining. As usual, looking at the format mana tells us a lot about it's rough shape. Like the mana says that Shards of Alara will be mostly under utilized for it's more straining multicolor cards. I do see a fires of Invention deck that casts Kenrith and Maeltorm Nexus though. Fires and Nexus are kind of an insane pairing. The fires player is put to the test, as the cards are there but baby Teferi is not, so counter magic can abound and check the deck easily.

I'm already enamored with the concept. The format is literally limited to only me, but I want to analyze and break it down, so I know it will connect with a larger audience. The spread of sets are fine, as a guaranteed core set and masters set means that at a baseline there is enough fixing, filler, and good power levels cards to make the format functional, while the other 4 give it identity. I really like the six set quantity, just big enough to make a large format, not so much where you are drowning in data. There should be plenty of archetype representation, I identified 9 decks in my first half hour that all seem powerful. It also tests a little a participants knowledge of Magic History, which I value. Have you've heard of some key cards out of each set at least? Do you know what were powerhouses in their constructed formats and why? And if not, can you see their potential?
