Main Deck - 77 cards, 35 distinct
Sideboard - 95 cards, 80 distinct
Notes
Classic Maze Formula:
12 Fog
6 Wipes (2 ultimate)
2 elixir of immortality
8 land Accel+ 4 Card draw engines (12 total, overlap between)
25 Land
3 flex
This deck, if I had realized the power of pithing needle, would have dominated theros block.
When I was first thinking about this deck for pioneer, I got really got caught up in all the shiny new toys. I started comparing it to the the other ramp decks and combo decks. It was factually negated by the the nexus decks, but luckily those are gone and I now have space to run this deck. At it's heart it is turbo fog, so that is the first version I should build.
So we get all the best cards our deck had to offer in the lands, fog/riot control, elixir of immortality, and crackling perimeter. But the upgrades are sweet.
We get just base rate 2 mana fogs for days in green. We have cyclonic rift and settle the wreckage as uber fog's, and we now have gates ablaze for a lower cost sweeper, and hour of devastation as a planar cleansing +. Better, we have big Ugin as a the best trump in the format, filling that role of planar cleansing, alternative win con, and ramp payoff. Instead of mopey dictate (which we never loved) we now now get guild summit which is just plain insane. Our flex spots include massive gate payoff creatures, extremely efficeient counterspells and removal, and additional CA like search for azcanta. We get an eleventh gate and plaza of harmony. Pithing needle is joined by unmoored ego, field of ruin, abrupt decay, gideon's intervention, and ashiok's erasure. Even elixir has a functionally the same but different option in devious cover-up. I want to explore a few of these builds as the basis of this deck. Instead of 4 gatekreeper vine, 2 urban, and 2 kiora we get 4 arboreal grazer and 4 growth spiral. Win-win-win-win-win.
Some problem areas:
A deck backed by little teferi is a real problem. A clock plus the inability to cast fog or counterspells is a real problem. If I can up the world destroying effects this may balance out, but is likeley that I will have to dedicate precious flexspots to cards that can interact with baby Teferi meaningfully. Similar, there are a host of problematic planeswalkers, like chandra torch of defiance, vraska golgari queen, and opposing ugin's.
My build has to be built to fight through a few thoughtseizes, which shouldn't be too difficult. Mutavault is also popular.
Wild slash is like a 4 of in a million decks, with stomp not far behind. In any deck with red, I need to amass multiple fogs to play through slash and bonecrusher giant. I may need to lean more into wipes to not be as soft to these cards. This needs to skew my deckbuilding as I want to default win aggro and control match-ups.
There are a few combo decks in the format, and I need to not just be dead to them game 1. Lotus decks have chronic flooding, graveyard, and the thassa win con as liabilities. Heliod combo requires some kind of interaction with walking ballista and/or heliod. cards that cover both are things like gideon's interventiaon and ashiok's erasure.
More midrange attrition decks are my hardest matchups, like sultai scarab god and doom foretold.
Popular anti-land cards are field of ruin, alpine moon, blood sun(maybe), dampenig sphere, and assassin's trophy. Knowing these are the tools of the trade I need to plan around it.
When thinking about my problem areas, i think of teferi, Planeswalkers, chronic, thassa, and graveyard, the scarab God, and stack based issues. All of these can be interacted through counterspells, and all of them are generally permanent based, so ubiquitous maindeck answers like assassin's trophy and utter end will be helpful. I think a suite of trophy, devious cover-up, and ugin main should give me some real options against any given matchup. Walking ballista is the trickiest through this suite, but can be interacted with.
Sideboard:
Go along with what is previously written, I also need enough cards for control matchups and the like where my fogs all need to come out, and probably enough counterspells to stop threats. Leyline of sanctity and the void are both interesting pickups, as is gideon of the trials. I should already be pre-boarded against aggro and creature midrange, so adding just a few options to combat their sideboard plans. Heavy emphasis in dominating the cards that matter in the more nuanced matchups. Having the option to loop oketra's mercy of Providence against decks winning through damage seems great.
