Notes
KANISTER'S GRIXIS URZA
BY MATT NASS
The deck uses Goblin Engineer and Whir of Invention to set up the Thopter-Sword combo, which goes from very powerful to insane with the addition of Urza. Urza means that each Thopter can tap for mana to create a new one, and the Sword can also tap for mana each time it returns. This means infinite Thopters, infinite life, infinite mana, and infinite Urza activations to draw your deck. If you can’t win from there, then I can’t help you.
The deck is surprisingly resilient as Sai and Urza can also present a pretty solid beatdown plan. Those can also help circumvent hate cards like Stony Silence, Collector Ouphe and Karn, the Great Creator - remember that Urza’s mana ability can be used even under these annoying hate cards. In matchups where the combo is tough, you can use Goblin Engineer to bring Ichor Wellspring in and out of play, netting you millions of cards.
With the fixing from Astrolabe and Mox Opal, this deck gets to splash quite a few sideboard cards. Removal like Bolt and Push are great, and Teferi is a cool way to make sure you won’t get interacted with.
I hope you enjoyed this look at Urza combo. If you're looking to build this deck yourself, now's a great time to get the Modern Horizons cards you need from this deck, such as Arcum's Astrolabe, Goblin Engineer, and Urza, Lord High Artificer. I’ll be back next week with another sweet Modern deck!
